Dear @Salesforce and the Trailblazer Community,
It's been a while since I've written anything on my personal blog but today was a day unlike any other.
I remember some ten years ago when I first learned about this software tool thingy called Salesforce and how businesses could use it to grow their business. An old pal of mine had a job at a company that used it. I also remember working at a startup that tried using it. Didn't know much about it, but was interested in learning more.
I graduated from Cal State University Northridge back in 2009 with a BA in Journalism, and after two internships in broadcast news, couldn't find a job anywhere. Like most grads at the time, I was wondering what do I do next. So I volunteered at nonprofits. I'd go on craigslist and idealist.org and find every volunteer gig possible, doing anything to keep me busy and keep my parents from nagging me. I even went to grad school and got a Masters' in Public Policy along the way from Cal State University Long Beach.
After grad school, I did some odd jobs, worked at a few startups and then one day got at a small nonprofit. That's where I was introduced to Chris Clark. I'll never forget the words he spoke when he offered me the job.
"Are you ready to change the world?"
I was like yeah, let's make it happen.
That was 2013. In the years since a lot has changed about the world. It would take forever to tell you about it, but one constant has always remained, an affirmation that I carry heart and soul through moments of joy, pain, sunshine, and rain. I could write a screenplay about this, but I'll keep it brief and modify it as needed.
"Make Everyday Your Masterpiece."
-John R. Wooden
This Golden Hoodie is more than just a celebration of how far I've gone, it's about how far the community has gone. It's about everyone who came in as themselves, innately curious and inveterately desiring to learn more and to build lasting bonds with the larger community, making lasting friendships, starting new families, starting new organizations and businesses, and in these times especially rising to the challenges of the world we're in.
You know, I used to be asked about the Trailblazer hoodie when I'm often seen wearing it and then I go into this long story about Salesforce and how I got to where I am today. But every time I see someone with that hoodie, it is a reminder of an incredible story waiting to be shared.
So today, I encourage all of you to put on your Trailblazer hoodie and to celebrate your successes, struggles, defeats, and your life story. I encourage you all to live your life like it's golden and to, in the words of John R. Wooden, Make Everyday Your Masterpiece.
To the Salesforce Community, I truly thank you for building me into the dude that I am today and for giving me an opportunity to have an avenue to be a part of something bigger than anyone component and in the broader picture, a chance to grow, inspire and learn.
To all of the Salesforce MVPs, my fellow Golden Hoodies, and everyone who works tirelessly every day to help change the world, I owe you my gratitude and we gotta meet up soon and party.
And most importantly, to whoever came up with the idea of the Salesforce Flow Builder, thank you for making the work that I do all the more fun and for being such creative, awesome people. And also I really can't wait for more cool things to come up in future releases.
I can't wait for Dreamforce to happen soon and I can't wait to see you all again.
And Chris, let's keep changing the world.
And to the entire Salesforce community, let's keep changing the world, not just change it, build it.
